Veterans Administration 40-Bed Nursing Home, Pueblo, Colorado

This 30,000 square foot Veterans Administration 40-bed nursing home was constructed under extreme time constraints due to the VA’s need to vacate their existing building. With the team effort and support of the VA staff, Pueblo municipalities, and local tradesmen, the VA took possession of this nursing home on April 4, 2002.

The exterior materials and color scheme were chosen to blend with the natural setting of the mountains. This steel framed structure was designed with a crawlspace due to the expansive soil and the need to utilize caissons. A standing seam gable roof compliments the stucco exterior with decorative banding.

A four wing, cross design was created to define a “way finding” system for residents. Each wing, designed in separate interior finish colorations, is utilized for specific needs, such as an access controlled Alzheimer’s Wing, administrative wing, and general care wings. Throughout the design and construction process, the needs of the VA were considered to be of highest priority, with required areas such as a full kitchen, dining room, therapeutic room, physicians offices, and recreation areas to name a few.
